ftp

FTP or "File Transfer Protocol" allows you to upload and download larger files from the internet and is quicker than using e-mail.  Other benefits are that you can locate a specific file at a time that suits you, even immediately without having to wait for someone to send it to you.  Clients may wish to upload files such as logos, scanned documents, and large text files etc for me to review and include in their site.

Here is what you will need to use FTP:

  1. Locate your FTP username and password which may have already been supplied to you in an e-mail, if not click here to have one sent to you.  Choose step 2 if you want to use a dedicated FTP program, or step 3 if you want to use the FTP facility within Internet Explorer.

  2. You will need an FTP client program, just as you would use Outlook Express as an e-mail client you can use a FTP client such as FileZilla
  3. to upload and download files. Click the link to download the program, and then double click the downloaded file.  Run through the installation process using the default configuration. Once the program is installed, run through the following steps to use FTP:
  4. Alternatively, you can also use Internet Explorer to gain access to an internet resource via FTP, even though it is an HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol) client for browsing web pages.  To use Internet Explorer for FTP run through the following steps.
    • Open Internet Explorer.
    • In the address bar type the following (inserting your FTP username and password in the correct places): ftp://username:password@ftp.servage.net
    • When the page loads it should read something like "FTP root at ftp.servage.net" at the top of the window.  When you see this page select "Open FTP site in Windows Explorer", which is available from the "Page" menu near the top right hand side of the browser (IE7).
    • You may be prompted once again to enter your username and/or password, enter it correctly to continue.
    • When the new window opens, it will be just like viewing a folder on your own computer, you can drag files in and out of this folder, just as you would on your computer at home.  Their should be a slight time delay, more noticeable with large files, as you are actually copying files to or from the "remote" computer where your website actually resides on the internet.
    • You may be able to add this location to your "Favorites" or "My Network Places", so that you can revisit it again more easily.  You will be prompted for your username and password whenever you do so.
    • When you are finished, you may close the window and FTP session by clicking the close box in the top right hand corner of the window, or by selecting close from the file menu.
